Who has access to the free community Wi-Fi?
Everyone in the Waco community has access to the free community Wi-Fi. Whether you're a student, a job seeker, or simply someone who wants to stay connected, the Wi-Fi is open to all.
What's the purpose?
The City of Waco recognizes the importance of internet access in our daily lives and is making a long-term commitment to improving access citywide. A large number of Waco residents lack home internet access, making it difficult to attend online classes, apply for jobs or tap into other social service resources. This initiative provides reliable, fast, and secure internet access in various key locations throughout the City. We hope to empower community members to connect online, access essential digital services, and thrive in our increasingly digital world.
How is this service different than Wi-Fi already provided at community centers and libraries?
Our community centers and libraries already offer great internet services inside their facilities in addition to offering access to desktop computers. The expanded community Wi-Fi initiative expands the wireless internet connection beyond the building interiors and into the park and parking lot areas. Strategically placed access points, offer a secure connection even when the community centers or libraries aren't open.
Who pays for it?
The community Wi-Fi initiative was made possible through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), which were awarded to prevent, prepare for, and respond to COVID-19. These critical investments align with the City of Waco’s strategic priorities to expand digital access, promote equity, and foster community innovation.
How does it work?
City of Waco crews have installed multiple access points at each community Wi-Fi location that deliver high-speed internet access with 100 Mbps upload and 100 Mbps download speeds. Each access point supports up to 50 users at a time, and the system will make adjustments based on available bandwidth. The infrastructure is built with a mesh Wi-Fi network, PowerStack solar poles, and fiber optic cables, ensuring seamless coverage, environmentally friendly installation, and long-term scalability.
How were the areas chosen?
The City of Waco carefully selected areas for expanded Wi-Fi services by focusing on City-owned facilities like community centers and libraries located in underserved neighborhoods. This strategic approach aims to bridge the digital divide and provide equitable access to technology for all Waco residents.
Are there restrictions on the community Wi-Fi?
While paid internet service will generally be more reliable, the free community Wi-Fi will still offer a reliable and strong internet connection for residents and visitors to access online services, including virtual doctor's appointments, job searches, virtual learning, and applications for assistance and benefits. It is filtered, so some streaming, gaming, and other websites may be blocked to ensure all accessible websites are family-friendly.
Will my internet use be tracked by the City of Waco?
No. The City of Waco will not track or collect information of community Wi-Fi users.
