Emergency Notice: Mt Carmel Water Treatment Plant Area

Emergency Investigation

The City of Waco is committed to transparency about an incident that occurred at the Mt. Carmel Water Treatment Plant this morning and will continue provide updates as more information becomes available.

Please see the below updates.

• The initial call for an unconscious person was at 7:24 am, sending emergency personnel, who transported the employee to the hospital.

• A second call was dispatched for an additional unconscious person, which activated HazMat's response to the scene at 8:27 am. This employee was transported to the hospital as well.

• The investigation following discovered high levels of carbon monoxide by the Waco Fire Department, thought to be caused by a small fire in a storage tank at the plant.

• A third employee was conscious and drove to the hospital for evaluation.

• Attempting to clear the air of carbon monoxide, a small fire smoldering in the storage tank expanded around 9:04 a.m.

• Residents in the area reported seeing smoke around this time.

• Two Waco Fire Department companies drove through the surrounding neighborhood to notify residents of the incident and answer any questions.

• At this time, there is no known immediate danger to the public, and the air quality surrounding the plant will continue to be monitored.
