Where Waco Comes Together: A History of the Waco Convention Center

Last updated on January 15, 2025 at 08:00 AM

The Waco Convention Center is an asset to the City of Waco’s event landscape. Located in Downtown Waco near the Brazos River, the center was built to serve as a hub for community events, trade shows, conferences, and more. Over the years, the facility has undergone several expansions and renovations, but the Waco Convention Center continues to reflect Waco’s heritage and growth.

Laying the Groundwork

In 1956, the City of Waco commissioned a master plan that identified the need for a convention center. This vision gained momentum in the following years, with the Waco Chamber of Commerce forming a committee to study the project’s feasibility.

However, securing funding was a challenge. In 1967, Waco voters approved a bond package that allocated $2.25 million for the convention center's construction. Land acquisition and architectural planning followed, with the Brazos Urban Renewal Project playing a crucial role in clearing the site.

Construction commenced in 1970 and was completed in time to welcome its first meeting for the Texas Surgical Society in October 1971. The Waco Convention Center was officially dedicated the following year on Jan. 15, 1972.

Did you know? Before the Waco Convention Center, the Roosevelt Hotel was the city’s prime convention and event facility until it closed in August 1961 to be converted into a retirement center.

Expansion and Renovation

The initial facility was relatively small, featuring a green mansard roof and orange-toned carpet, primarily catering to local events. However, the City recognized the need for expansion. In 1988, McLennan Hall, the Bosque Theater, and DeCordova Rooms were added, increasing the center's capacity by 20,000 square feet.

A major milestone arrived in 2007 when Waco voters approved a bond package to fund a complete renovation. This ambitious project, completed in August 2012, saw the addition of over 25,000 square feet, bringing the total square footage to 144,000.

Key improvements included the replacement of a wooden staircase with escalators, a new glass atrium entrance, and a balcony for the Brazos Ballroom. The renovation also refreshed the Freedom Fountain.

Did you know? The Freedom Fountain was installed in 1973 to honor local leaders who advocated for the release of Vietnamese prisoners of war.
