As early as February 1908, residents of North Waco, specifically in an area known as College Heights, began discussing the need for a fire station to enhance protection for their growing neighborhood. This discussion continued until February 1912, when city commissioners voted to schedule a bond election for April 2. Among the bonds up for voter consideration was $20,000 designated for the construction of a fire station in North Waco. The voters approved the bonds.
In July of that year, the city purchased a lot at the corner of 15th and Herring Streets for the station's construction. By late August, city commissioners approved a contract to build the station. Construction on the two-story fire station was completed in January 1913, and on February 27, 1913, it was officially accepted into the Waco Fire Department, which at the time consisted of both paid firefighters and volunteers.
This station served the department until it was replaced by a new, one-story facility at the same location in 1969. In July 2009, the Waco City Council approved an application for federal grant money to build a new fire station in a different location. The new Station 7 was dedicated on November 12, 2014, at 1325 N. 5th Street, where it continues to serve the residents of North Waco, East Waco, and downtown.
